TRT Radio Ankara Polyphonic Choir, Turkey

TRT Radio Ankara Polyphonic Choir was established in 1970. Having been trained by the prominent musicians of Turkey for two years, the choir commenced its early performances under the conduction of Hikmet ŞİMŞEK. Following conductors were Walter STRAUSS between 1974-1985,  Bujor HOINIC between 1985-1987 and Jan SZELEPCNYI in 1988. The choir which has been conducted by Elnara KERIMOVA since 1992 is the first professional acapella choir of Turkey and has an extensive repertoire that includes many works from renaissance music to contemporary music.

Contemporary Turkish Music holds a special place in the repertoire. The choir is well known both in Turkey and abroad thanks to the rich resources provided by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation. Recordings of various examples from the choir’s repertoire have been broadcast by numerous foreign radio stations. The Choir has always been well received by the audience and the art world with its concert shows broadcast periodically on TRT Radio and TV channels, live radio studio performances, various concerts accompanied by symphony orchestras, and domestic and international tours. An important domestic influence of the choir  can be observed in the establishment of new choir associations as well as in the substantial increase in the number of acapella choirs in Turkey thanks to the encouragement it’s provided.

The choir won the third prize in the competition participated by 17 choirs from 12 countries in Pollheim, Germany in 1983. In 1994, the choir was granted the outstanding service for polyphonic music award by the Polyphonic Chorus Association of Turkey. In 1997, the choir performed in a TV show shot in the Atatürk’s House in Thessaloniki following the reception of the special jury award in 15th International Choirs Competition   in Karditsa, Greece. A compilation of various works performed by the choir since its establishment was published as LP record as a TRT- TUTAV coproduction; and as compact cassette as a TRT-Hasanoğlan Municipality coproduction, and with the introduction of digital technology, both compilations were reproduced as CD. The choir was granted 2003 “Hayri Akay Award” by the Respect the Art Association, and The Choir Of The Year 2011 Award by the magazine Andante.

TRT Radio Ankara Polyphonic Choir celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010 with a series of concerts with the participation of numerous prominent conductors.
